Facebook launches Instagram Lite: All you need to knowFacebook-owned Instagram has launched a toned-down version called Instagram Lite. The app is already listed on Google Play Store.
An Instagram spokesperson confirmed to TechCrunch that the app is being tested in Mexico currently, which will also make its way to other emerging markets as well. “We are testing a new version of Instagram for Android that takes up less space on your device, uses less data, and starts faster.”
As per the description, “The Instagram Lite app is small, allowing you to save space on your phone and download it quickly.” The app offers standard features of the Instagram app such as posting photos, sharing 24-hour Stories, discover new content in the Explore tab. Direct Messages feature is not present in the current version of the Instagram Lite but will soon get the messaging and video sharing feature.
The Instagram Lite app weighs 573KB and should soon be available in India as well.
Photo-sharing app Instagram has been on a launch spree this week, first with a dedicated video app called the IGTV and then introducing new Explore Tab feature and Group video calling support.
The IGTV app aims to feature videos from rising internet celebrities, artists and pets, some of whom have tens of millions of social media followers and directly lock horns with Google-owned YouTube.
Instagram’s recent launch spree
As part of the recent update, Instagram introduced the presence of topic channels on the top such as “Animals”, “Photography” and more. Users will see a tray at the top with personalized channels. This includes a ‘For You’ channel, which has a mix of posts tailored as per users’ interests.
Also, users can now do a video chat using Instagram Direct, both one-on-one and with multiple people.
Lastly, the company has also rolled out the first batch of new camera effects designed by Ariana Grande, Buzzfeed, Liza Koshy, Baby Ariel and NBA in the Instagram camera. For this, users will have to follow any of these accounts.
